Bed in a Box is a well-established US memory foam mattress brand, offering a good range of mattresses, pillows, toppers and other bed-related items. The PacBed Original 9” memory foam mattress is among the lower-priced offerings from Bed in a Box. Despite it’s relatively inexpensive price, the PacBed is made up of an impressive combination of memory foam layer (3”) and a high resilience base layer (6”). This composition, and the quality of the materials used, offers a supportive, pressure neutralising performance.
The layered composition doesn’t however include any concession to air flow, with the memory foam and base layer together. This doesn’t do the PacBed Original any favours when it comes to retaining warmth and overheating the user throughout the night. Anyone who is particularly sensitive to high temperatures during the night may find this mattress uncomfortable. The Bed in a Box website states that the memory foam density is 3lb – placing it clearly at the lower scale of available memory foam mattress densities and raising a question over longevity and performance.
Overall, the Bed in a Box PacBed Original represents a good quality entry-level memory foam mattress for the price, and certainly outperforms other lower price alternatives that don’t employ a layered composition. However, for a first-rate memory foam performance experience we would recommend looking at more expensive varieties – especially those that employ air flow layers.
Summary: A decent entry level mattress for those on a budget, although those that have experienced denser higher end mattresses may be left wanting.
